20120509: Show beat Eidsvoll, move to 1-1

Just like last week's game against Kristiansand, AFC Show received the ball to start the game. The difference this week was that there was a substantial amount of wind, which highly affected how the offense could operate in the 1st and 4th quarters. This proved to be a real challenge in a defensive minded 1st quarter, where Eidsvoll pinned Show deep in our own territory right away. After the teams traded ineffective offensive drives, Show got the ball and a bad shotgun snap sailed over QB Pål Dannevig's head, only to be returned a few yards for the opening touchdown of the day by Eidsvoll's Heine Disserud, making his comeback after four years away from the gridiron. The PAT was good, and Eidsvoll had a 7-0 lead. The rest of the 1st quarter was a defensive-minded battle where both teams also seemed to fight the constant changing weather - wind, snow and rain all made an appearance just to make it interesting.

The 2nd quarter saw AFC Show continue to play solid aggressive defense, led by veteran DL Ole Petter Ølberg who had a fantastic game. Several fumbles were forced throughout the game by players such as DL/LB/TE Darryl Kennon and picked up by other defensive players like LB Eric Baden and DB Christian Andreassen. One of those fumble recoveries set AFC Show up with a short field that gave the Show offense a chance to answer in the scoring column. That is exactly what happened, as RB/LB Jorma Bailey reached the endzone for his second touchdown of the year behind the blocking of FB Rob Schaper-Kotter and OL Cody McDermott. The PAT kick by Truls Johansen was good, making the score 7-7.

Not long after the Show offense produced a good drive that led to a touchdown pass from Pål Dannevig to TE/DL Darryl Kennon. The PAT was blocked, but picked up by Kennon who advanced it to the endzone for a two-point conversion. The score at this point was 15-7, which was also the halftime score.

Last week AFC Show more or less shut down after halftime. This week avoiding that was a focus, and the 3rd quarter saw AFC Show open in the same fashion that the 2nd quarter ended; the defense was dominating and the offense was churning yards and producing points. Dannevig once again found Kennon in the endzone on a pass TD, followed by a failed PAT that turned into a two-point conversion pass from Dannevig to Kennon.

Later in the 3rd quarter, veteran AFC Show RB/DB Simon Bruset found the endzone on a short run. The PAT was wide, leaving the score at 29-7. At this point it looked more likely that Show would score more rather than that Eidsvoll would get on the scoreboard again. However, QB Dax Michelena and the 1814s saw it differently, and after a long pass to WR Ole A. Galaasen, Michelena scrambled into the endzone for a 20-yard touchdown run as the Show defense got caught out of their assignments. The PAT was good, making the score 29-14 at the very end of the 3rd quarter.

As the 3rd quarter gave way to the 4th, the 1814s stepped up their defensive effort and shut down the Show offense, giving the ball back to an Eidsvoll offense that was starting to find their rhythm. Micehelena found receivers such as Arne A. Skovseth, Ole A. Galaasen and Brian Moro, with the latter being at the receiving end of a touchdown pass into the endzone. The following two-point conversion attempt saw Michelena find Galaasen who made a great catch at the back of the endzone. 29-21, and the 1814s were truly back in the game with less than 2 minutes left to play. AFC Show got the ball back and immediately produced a fumble thanks to a great effort by the 1814s, giving the Eidsvoll team yet another chance at scoring. However, it was not to be, as the Show defense stepped up when it counted most, and a failed 4th down conversion meant the AFC Show offense could enter the field for the last time of the day - this time to take a knee and run out the clock.

"We played three quarters of solid football today", AFC Show Head Coach Jarle Magnus Henriksen commented. "Next time we need to make it four quarters for the first time this year". Henriksen was pleased with the end result and the great effort of the 25 AFC Show players on the day, many of whom played both ways much of the game. There is however lots to work on if AFC Show hope to be a contender for the Norwegian championship title.
"The 1814s are obviously a program with history on their side. It was their first game of the year, just like last week was our first game of the year. With such an impressive roster of high quality players, I'm sure they'll be in the playoff picture", Henriksen said.

You can check out AFC Show highlights from the game in the videos below the text in this article.

Show's defensive back Truls Ødegaard suffered an injury in the game. Ødegaard may be back in time for the playoffs.

AFC Show's next game is away against the NTNUI Nidaros Domers in Trondheim on the 26th of May.

A home team decimated by players with other commitments faced the only team to play in all of the last 8 Norwegian championship games (and who'd won 7 of those 8): The Eidsvoll 1814s. 25 players suited up, but it proved to be 25 focused and dedicated men that made a little piece of football history, securing AFC Show's first ever win in the top division in Norway.

With the lack of available scout film of the 1814s, Show had spent the time since our first game in Kristiansand focusing on improving our own play. It was a focus that seemed to pay off.

Leading 15-7 at halftime, the scene was all too familiar for the Show, but the Stavanger team came out and played well in the 3rd quarter too, leading 29-7 at one point.

Eidsvoll finally woke up in the last part of the game, making it very exciting as they almost caught up with AFC Show. The final score? 29-21 for AFC Show.
